A CARING DOCTOR TAKES HIS SKILLS TO FAR-FLUNG PLACES
Abu S. Alam, M.D. has had an obstetrics and gynecology practice in
Westfield and Summit, NJ since 1981. New York Magazine
recognized this 2005 Ellis Island Medal of Honor recipient as one of
the Top Doctors in the tri-state (NY, NJ, CT) area in its annual "Best Doctors" issue.

Dr. Alam trained at LSU and was chief resident at Saint Vincent’s
Hospital in New York City. He has been on the attending staff at
Overlook Hospital in Summit since opening his practice in New
Jersey. He also served as the Vice-Chief and then Chief of
the Department of OB/GYN at Overlook Hospital from 1992-1996 and is board certified in OB-GYN.

Besides an almost cult following of devoted patients in New Jersey,
Dr. Alam treats the poorest of the poor in far-flung parts of the world.
He is passionately involved in helping people in third-world countries
who have little or no access to medical care.

Dr. Alam has traveled to Haiti innumerable times to perform
gynecological surgery. He literally operates from sunup to sundown,
under difficult conditions. If the electricity goes off in the middle of
surgery, he finishes the operation by flashlight.

This past April, Dr. Alam and some friends built and opened a
100-bed hospital in a remote area of Bangladesh, his home country.
Nandina General Hospital offers the only medical care for miles
around. They hope to soon increase the number of beds to 400.
Dr. Alam, though, is proudest of the dining facility they built at the
hospital. "Now we know patients and hospital workers can eat. The
meals are as important as the medical care," he says.
