Daniel J. Sullivan is the visionary who founded Pittsburgh-based FedEx Ground, formerly RPS, in 1985.  Under his direction, FedEx Ground grew from a start-up operations into a leading international carrier with annual revenues of $6 billion.  Sullivan retired as President and Chief Executive Officer of FedEx Ground, the second largest operating unit of FedEx Corporation, on December 31, 2006.

Sullivan began his transportation career in 1972 as an operations supervisor for Roadway Express.  During his 11-year tenure there, he held several management posts.  In 1983, he joined Roadway Servies, Inc. where he founded Roadway Package System (RPS), serving as its President and CEO until 1990.  Sullivan became Vice President and Group Executive, National Carrier Group for Roadway Services in 1990 and was promoted to Senior Vice President and President of the National Carrier Group in 1993, President and Chief Operating Officer of Roadway in 1994 and Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer in 1995.  He served on the Board of Directors of Roadway Services from 1990 to 1996.  In 1996, Sullivan led the transformation of Caliber Systems, Inc. (formerly Roadway Services) from a traditional holding company to a strategic provider of transportation and logistics services.  Sullivan served as Chairman, President and CEO of Caliber until 1998.  In 1998, Caliber System was acquired by FedEx Corporation, after which Sullivan returned to FedEx Ground where he served as President and CEO until his retirement.

A 1969 graduate of Amherst College, Sullivan is a member of the Board of Directors of Computer Task Group, Inc. (Buffalo, NY), Gevity, Inc. (Bradenton, FL), Pike Electric, Inc. (Mount Airy, NC), GDS Express, Inc. (Akron, OH), and the Flight 93 National Memorial Federal Advisory Commission.  Recent professional awards include Pittsburgh “Industrialist of the Year” for 2002 by the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR); Vectors Pittsburgh “Man of the Year” in Business and Labor for 2002; the 2006 Achievement Awards for Business by the Ireland Chamber of Commerce in the United States, Inc. (ICCUSA); and the 2007 Ellis Island Medal of Honor by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations Foundation (NECO).  Sullivan was inducted into the Western Pennsylvania Business Hall of Fame in February 2007.
