  Andrew A. Athens has received many, many awards and honors in recognition of his outstanding service to Church and Community, devotion to human rights and social justice, and commitment to the American spirit and faith in this nation. He has been recognized for his multi-faceted exemplary service to the Chicago business community, to the Greek Orthodox Church and Hellenism and the osteopathic medical profession. Andrew Athens has also been acknowledged for his concern for his fellow man, exemplified by his philanthropic endeavors especially his great concern and support for justice and human rights for Cyprus and the Cypriot refugees. He received a Doctor of Letters (Litt.D.) From the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in appreciation for the guidance he provided during its greatest period of growth.

  His outstanding active service in the United States Army during the Second World War in the Middle East and European Theaters included service as a Liaison Officer with the Belgian Government. He was commended for helping the Hungarian Government restore the war-destroyed transportation facilities in Hungary.

  Upon completion of his military duties, Andrew Athens became founding President and Chief Executive Officer of Metron Steel Corporation, a major steel service center in Chicago from 1950 to 1991. He was also a Director of the LaSalle National Bank.

  Among his multitude of Greek Orthodox religious activities are "Archon" of the Great Church of Christ. This is a title conferred upon individuals honoring them for their service and dedication to the Church by the Ecumenical Patriarch. He has received the Archdiocese Service Award for outstanding service and leadership in the cause of human justice and humanitarian needs for the people of Cyprus. He is Chairman Emeritus of the Archbishop Iakovos leadership 100 Endowment Fund whose primary responsibility is raising a $50 million endowment fund for the Archdiocese and for the perpetuation of Orthodoxy in the Americas. It would take pages and pages to list all of Andrew Athens' strong religious activities and the many honors he's received.

  He is the founder and national Chairman of the United Hellenic American Congress and a co-founder and Chairman of the Board of the Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce, USA. Additionally, Mr. Athens is an Honorary Member of the Board of Directors of the American Foundation of Greek Language and Culture. The AFGLC is dedicated to preserving and propagating the Greek language and cultural tradition in the United States of America and strengthening the intellectual ties between the Greek and the American peoples.

  Mr. Athens received a Limited Issue Gold Commemorative Medallion honoring Archbishop Makarios. This medallion was presented for his great concern and support for justice and human rights for Cyprus and the Cypriot refugees.
