Bharat
B. Bhatt Mr. Bhatt, who is of Indian ancestry, is
president and chief operating officer of GreenPoint Financial.
His achievements not only reflect the contributions to American
life that so many people of immigrant backgrounds have made, they
exemplify the highest standards and best qualities associated with the
Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Besides its position as an outstanding
financial institution under Mr. Bhatt’s leadership, GreenPoint operates
the GreenPoint Foundation with an endowment of $50 million that provides
funding for education and affordable housing in communities served by
GreenPoint Bank. The
foundation’s GreenPoint Achievers award has provided scholarships
totaling 2.3 million to 231 college students from New York City,
Westchester and Long Island. The
foundation also supports organizations like Neighborhood Housing Services
that promote affordable housing through annual homeownership grants.
On a personal level, Mr. Bhatt does
low-key volunteer work at area hospitals, preferring the institutions not
know his executive position. He
also works with Indian organizations to help distribute clothing to the
needy. Mr. Bhatt, who has a long and
distinguished career in banking, joined GreenPoint in 1995.
He previously served as chief financial officer for Shawmut
National Corporation from 1991 to 1994 and was senior vice president for
risk management at Mellon Bank. Mr.
Bhatt began his career with Chemical Bank in 1971 where he served as vice
president and director of Swap Group for Less Developed Countries, head of
the Portfolio Management Group and vice president of corporate finance.
He holds degrees in commerce and law from the University of Bombay
and attended the Harvard Business School Management Program. Mr. Bhatt’s personal character is exemplified by the community services provided by the bank and in his personal volunteer work in which he eschews the limelight.
