Dr. Paul F. Boulos
Lebanese
2009 Recipient

Dr. Paul Fares Boulos was born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1963 from a Lebanese father and a Syrian mother (the heroine of Etel Adnan’s famous novel “Sitt Marie-Rose”). After finishing his high school at the College Protestant Francais and earning his Lebanese Baccalaureate, he attended the Lebanese American University (then Beirut University College) for a two-year pre-engineering degree and then moved to the U.S. in 1983. He graduated with a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Kentucky (Lexington, Kentucky) where he began his career as an Assistant Professor working on developing state-of-the-art computer programs for analyzing flows and pressures in drinking water distribution systems. His work was motivated by an intense awareness of global drinking water problems and their tragic consequences. Within one year, he co-authored KYPIPED, which quickly became an industry standard.

Two years later, Dr. Boulos entered the engineering consulting arena, joining MWH Global, one of the world’s leading environmental engineering firms. With more than 7,500 employees in 35 countries and annual revenues exceeding $1.4 billion, MWH Global is one of the world’s top three experts on power, water and wastewater issues, topping the ENR list in wet infrastructure for the last two years.

He quickly rose through the ranks, serving as project engineer, project manager, department manager, technical director, director of intellectual property, vice president, senior vice president, and a president and director, and attended the Advanced Management Program (AMP) at Harvard Business School (Boston, Massachusetts).

Dr. Boulos currently serves as President and Chief Operating Officer of multi-million-dollar engineering software company MWH Soft, a wholly-owned subsidiary of MWH Global, which he co-founded. He also serves on the software firm’s Board of Directors.

Today, some 70 percent of the largest US cities run on MWH Soft software. In addition to being a leader in the North American water and wastewater industries, the firm serves clients in over 40 other countries on five continents. Over the past nine years, Dr. Boulos has led MWH Soft to impressive growth and returns, with consistent double-digit profitability year after year. In 2008, despite a very tough operating environment and challenging global macroeconomic issues, the company posted record financial performance with gross revenue, operating income, operating margin and backlog at all-time highs. Gross revenue increased by 11 percent (double the level of just four years ago). Operating income was up 15 percent (triple the level of just four years ago). Backlog was up 56 percent (quadruple the level of just four years ago). Operating margin was up 200 basis points to a record 42 percent -- an industry leading margin.

Dr. Boulos became a world’s leading authority on drinking water distribution engineering, from hydraulics to water quality principles, at a young age. He is acclaimed for his practical and scientific expertise and his extensive experience in both academe and the corporate world, and his pioneering work on distribution systems water quality modeling is now an industry standard worldwide. The author of nine authoritative books and more than 100 technical articles on water and wastewater engineering, he is regularly invited to speak on science, engineering, entrepreneurship and philanthropy.

He has been honored by numerous national and international scientific and engineering societies as well as government and research organizations and NGOs. Among them are leading technical awards from the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Water Works Association and the US Environmental Protection Agency. In 2008, he became the youngest person — and one of only sixteen distinguished engineering professionals worldwide — to be awarded Honorary Diplomate status (Hon.D.WRE) by the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers, the academy’s highest honor. He is listed in the Marquis Who’s Who in the World, America, Science and Engineering, Finance and Industry, Finance and Business, and the West.

Dr. Boulos has always been committed to the welfare of young people. Among his many involvements, he chairs the Board of International Advisors and is an Ex-Officio Trustee of the Lebanese American University (Beirut, Lebanon); he was honored as 2008 Alumnus of the Year. He also serves on the Board of Directors of AMIDEAST (Washington DC), on the Dean’s International Council of the Harris School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago (Chicago, IL), and on the National Advisory Board of the Arab-American National Museum (Dearborn, MI). He was awarded in 2008 the prestigious Ray R. Irani Pride of Heritage Award from the Lebanese American Foundation in Los Angeles, California, as well as Special US Congressional Recognition for his outstanding and invaluable service to the community.

Dr. Boulos also served on the External Advisory Board of the Civil and Environmental Engineering School of the American University of Beirut (Beirut, Lebanon), as well as on many advisory and executive committees for organizations including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Science Advisory Board and the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council.

Dr. Boulos also currently serves with Secretary Spencer Abraham as an Advisory Board member for Lynx Investment Advisory, LLC (Washington DC). He resides in Colorado with his wife, Katya, and ten year old daughter, Daria.
