Jack Butler is co-leader of Skadden’s global corporate restructuring practice. He focuses on advising companies experiencing financial difficulties, purchasers of and investors in distressed companies, and lenders to and creditors of such companies on complex business reorganizations, troubled company M&A, debt restructurings and financing matters. Mr. Butler’s cross-border experience includes representing numerous companies with the restructuring of their subsidiaries outside the U.S., international financing transactions, privatization transactions and divestiture of various business lines and entities. He also regularly advises officers and directors of public companies involved in debt restructuring on matters relating to corporate governance and fiduciary duty.

Companies Mr. Butler has represented in their reorganizations include Delphi Corporation, Kmart Corporation, Per-Se Technologies (formerly Medaphis Corporation), Rite Aid Corporation, Singer N.V., Sprint Nextel Corporation, Trident Resources Corp., US Airways Group, Inc., Venator Group, Inc. and Xerox Corporation. Additionally, he has acted as special counsel to 360/networks, inc., Enron Corporation and The Warnaco Group; and Air Transport International, Comdisco, Inc., FPA Medical Management, Inc., Service Merchandise Company, Inc. and USN Communications, Inc. in the disposition of their operating businesses and assets to third parties. Creditor matters include advice to the agent for the senior lenders in the reorganization cases of Bradlees, Inc. and The Grand Union Company; Credit Suisse First Boston, in connection with the restructuring and sale of Long John Silver’s restaurants; and Verizon Capital Corporation and its special purpose affiliates in the reorganization cases of PG&E National Energy Group, Inc. and USGen New England, Inc.

In 2008, he was one of two practicing lawyers and 10 inductees in the inaugural class of the Turnaround, Restructuring and Distressed Investing Industry Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was created to honor and preserve the names of those whose outstanding individual contributions have made a lasting positive impact on an industry dedicated to stabilizing underperforming companies, rebuilding corporate value and retaining jobs. Mr. Butler also received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2008, which is awarded to outstanding Americans who exemplify outstanding qualities in both their personal and professional lives, while continuing to preserve the richness of their particular heritage.

Mr. Butler is listed as a leader in the corporate restructuring and insolvency field in the current editions of Chambers Global; Chambers USA; The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers; Who’s Who Legal USA; Who’s Who Illinois; The Best Lawyers in America; Euromoney and Legal Media Group’s Expert Guide to the World’s Leading Insolvency and Restructuring Lawyers; IFLR 1000; Global Counsel (PLC Which Lawyer?); and The Lawdragon 500: Leading Lawyers in America. He also has been listed in every edition of the K&A Restructuring Register, the peer group listing of the top restructuring attorneys and financial advisors in the United States, and has been named annually by Turnarounds & Workouts in its ranking of the outstanding restructuring lawyers in America for 10 consecutive years. Mr. Butler was one of The American Lawyer’s “Dealmakers of the Year” in 2004.

Mr. Butler is a past chairman of the American Board of Certification and Turnaround Management Association, and is a past chairman of the Governing Board of the Commercial Finance Association Education Foundation. He is a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and the International Insolvency Institute.
