Vincent J. Calamia, M.D. A specialist in internal medicine who is board certified in primary care and endocrinology, Dr. Calamia has a private practice and is Chief of Geriatrics at Staten Island University Hospital. He also serves as President and CEO of University Physicians Group (UPG), one of the largest group practices in the United States. In addition, he trains residents and medical students as a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the State University of New Yorks School of Medicine at Downstate Medical Center. Dr. Calamia co-founded University Physicians Group in 1991 as a professional corporation, which today consists of 150 physicians and nearly 450 other medical and clerical employees. The past decade has seen UPG expand through mergers and acquisitions involving existing practices, as well as through the creation of new practices. UPG has 45 locations in Staten Island and Brooklyn where patients receive primary care and some specialty services. Each physician is an employee of the group, which itself is a rather unique situation. With all of its practices under a central administration, UPG has reduced costs and increased efficiency for its member physicians. A subsidiary company, Cambridge Management Services, handles all administrative requirements such as billing, payroll, and real estate management, thus freeing physicians to spend their time on patient visits. UPG has expanded these services outside the group to Staten Island University Hospital and many of the hospitals outreach clinics around New York City. Added to his busy schedule, Dr. Calamia also sits on the Board of The Forums Children Foundation, and through his services and his hospital affiliations, he has spearheaded the Foundations efforts to help children in dire need of surgery not easily available to them in their native country.
