Dan Burton is serving his tenth term as a United States Congressman from Indiana’s Sixth District.  His first term in Congress began in November, 1982.  The Sixth District lies in central Indiana and includes all of Clinton, Tipton, Hamilton, and Hancock Counties, and parts of Marion, Henry, Boone, Johnson and Morgan Counties.

When Congressman Burton assumed the Chairmanship of the Committee on Government Reform in the 105th Session of Congress, he became the first Hoosier Republican to chair a full committee in more than sixty years.  The last was Rep. William Robert Wood, who chaired the Committee on Appropriations during the 71st Congress (1929-1931).

Voting Record:  According to the Clerk of the House of representatives, Congressman Burton had a 92.7 percent voting attendance record in the 105th Congress.  His career voting percentage from 1983-1998 is 96.3 percent, one of the highest in the House.

Congressman Burton has received special recognition from several organizations for his voting record in Congress.  His honors include:

·    Eleven Golden Bulldog Awards from the Watchdogs of the Treasury
for voting to cut wasteful Federal spending and reduce taxes.

·     Ten Taxpayers’ Friend Awards from the National Taxpayers Union for fiscal responsibility.

·     Six Guardian of Small Business Awards from the National Federation of Independent Business for supporting small business.

·     Ten National Security Leadership Awards for supporting a policy of peace through strength.  The awards are given jointly by the American Security Council, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Reserve Officer Association.

·     Thirteen Spirit of Enterprise Awards from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for voting in support of free enterprise and a strong economy.

Dan Burton was born June 21, 1938 in Indianapolis, Indiana.  He attended Shortridge High School, Indiana University, and Cincinnati Bible Seminary.  He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserves 1957-62.  He served in the Indiana State Senate 1969-70 and 1981-82, and in the Indiana House of Representatives 1967-68 and 1977-80.  The Burton Family resides in Indianapolis.
