Frederick J. Massimi, Sr. Business Leader Italian 1992 Recipient Frederick J. Massimi, Sr. is a native New Yorker born in 1923. He is a graduate of Straubenmuller Textile High School in Manhattan and began his career in the textile industry in 1939. In 1943, Mr. Massimi entered the United States Army and took part in the Allied invasion of Normandy. He served the rest of his tour in France and was honorably discharged in 1945. In 1957, Frederick J. Massimi founded Newburgh Dyeing Corp., which became Arma Textile Printers in 1984. Mr. Massimi serves as the Chief Executive Officer; and under his direction and guidance, the company has grown substantially from its early days in Beacon to its present size. His company currently employs over 250 workers. Frederick Massimi has served as First Vice President, as well as Chairman of the House Committee, of the prestigious Columbus Citizens Foundation. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Columbus Scholarship Fund and is a major contributor to the Fund. Additionally, he's been the Chairman of the Cooley's Lifeline Ball and three-time Chairman of the Columbus Club's Ballo Romantico. Frederick J. Massimi has been an active member of the American Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta since his induction in 1972. In 1978, he was invested as a Knight in the Association of Knights and Ladies of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. In January 1993, Mr. Massimi was appointed to the Advisory Board of Interchange State Bank. That same year, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation. In September 1994, Frederick Massimi was knighted by Prince Vittorio Emanuele of the House of Savoy, Grand Master of the Order of Saints Maurice & Lazarus for his charitable and humanitarian works. Further, in November of 1994, he became the first male honoree of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Columbus Citizens Foundation for his propagation of the ideals of this organization. He has been the fundraising Chairman of the annual Columbus Day Parade in New York City four times and was the General Chairman in 1994. In April of 1995, Mr. Massimi received the Golden Lion Award from the Order of Sons of Italy in America for his contributions as a true role model helping to promote a positive image of Italians and Italian-Americans within their profession and community. On October 23, 1995, Frederick Massimi received from His Holiness Pope John Paul II, through his emissary, His Eminence Angelo Cardinal Sodano, Secretary of State of the Holy See to the Vatican, a Papal declaration proclaiming him Knight Commander in the Order of Saint Gregory the Great. On May 6, 1996, the President of the Republic of Italy bestowed upon him the rank of Cavaliere in the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy. That same month, he was promoted from Cavaliere to the rank of Cavaliere Ufficiale by the Grand Master of the Order of Saints Maurice & Lazarus. In June 1996, he was General Chairman of the Puccini Foundation's 100th year Anniversary. In April 1997, Mr. Massimi was invested in the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George as a Knight of Merit. In June 1997, Frederick Massimi was General Chairman of the Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation's Annual Recital and Awards Gala event, held in October 1997. In September 1997, the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, in a ceremony at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, promoted Mr. Massimi to Knight Commander of the Order. In October 1997, Prince Vittorio Emanuale, House of Savoy, Grand Master of the Order of Saints Maurice & Lazarus, decorated Mr. Massimi as a Commendatore to the Order in a special ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland. In April 1998, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of the National Italian American foundation, Washington, DC. The same month, he was re-appointed to the Advisory Board of Interchange State Bank. Mr. Massimi presently resides in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey with his wife, Amelia.
