George Boyadjieff Chairman Varco International, Inc. Bulgarian / Russian 2003 Recipient
George Boyadjieff is the Chairman Emeritus and recently
retired CEO of Varco International, a NYSE, diversified Oil Service
Company with over $1.4 billion in annual revenues.
He joined Varco in 1969 as Chief Engineer and was appointed CEO in
1991. He has held numerous
positions during his 33-year career at Varco International including, Vice
President of Operations, Division President, Corporate President and COO.
He remains a director of the company, a position he has held for
over 26 years. During his
tenure, Varco has grown from a small privately owned company doing less
than $3 million per annum to its present size. George holds over 50 US patents, many of them contributing
substantially to the revenue growth of Varco and is considered the
industrys leading expert in Oil and Gas well drilling equipment. As
President and COO he was instrumental in leading the Company through the
biggest downturn ever experienced by an Industry from 1981 to 1990.
George was instrumental in the companys survival during this
difficult time and later as CEO was able to grow the company from $130
million to over $1 billion in annual revenue through a series of
acquisitions, mergers and new product development activities. In May of 2000 George successfully merged Varco, a capital
goods company, with Tuboscope, a service company equal in size to Varco.
This combination has dramatically broadened Varco scope and depth
and today Varco is considered one of the best mid cap companies in the Oil
Service sector. George began his career working for Lawrence Livermore
Laboratory, a US national laboratory, as a research engineer.
He also worked for the Bendix Corporation, now a part of Honeywell
as an aerospace project engineer. He
holds BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of
California at Berkeley. George lives in Orange County, California with Beverly his
wife of 42 years. He serves
on a local hospital advisory board and on the advisory board of the
business school of the California State University at Fullerton, the
fourth largest business school in the nation and the largest in
California. In addition he is
on the boards of two industry associations, the Petroleum Equipment
Suppliers Association for which he also serves as Chairman and the
National Ocean Industries Association for which he serves as Vice
Chairman. He has lectured all
over the world, authored numerous technical papers and serves as a guest
lecturer at California State University at Fullerton.
