George Filios was born in February 6, 1935 in Meligala, Messinia, Peloponnesus, Greece. The entire Filios family left from Patra, Greece and arrived in New York City on December 22, 1955. Uncles and cousins from Lowell, Massachusetts met them in New York.

In early January 1956, George went to work in the textile mills. In 1957, he began to work in the construction industry as a painter and carpenter. He also attended school in the evening to learn English and the Principles of Construction. In 1958, in partnership with George Papageorge, G & G Construction Company was founded.

In 1959, his uncle came to Lowell to visit his mother whom he had not seen in 52 years. This reunion was so moving that he invited George and his sister to move to California.

On May 12, 1961 in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, George Filios took his oath of citizenship and thereafter moved to California. While in California, he joined the Carpenters Union and continued his education. He was soon in a position to more his family from Massachusetts to Concord, California. In 1964, in partnership with Alex Spanos and Jimmy Kavalas, he built his first apartment complex.

He returned to Greece in 1966 where he met and married Nitsa Stratara, his wife of over 30 years.

When they returned to the United States in 1967, the Filios Construction Company was established; and independently, he began to build apartment complexes. While building on his own, George Filios teamed up with Alex Spanos to construct additional apartment complexes.

His first child, Spiridon George Filios, was born on December 29, 1968.

The A.G. Spanos Companies were very successful; and in early 1969, Alex Spanos offered Mr. Filios the position of Construction Manager. This was the start of a nearly thirty-year relationship with the A.G. Spanos Companies and the Spanos family.

His second child, daughter Vayia George Filios, was born on June 15, 1970.

In 1974, George Filios discovered the booming economy of southern Nevada and in 1975 moved his family to Las Vegas where they joined the St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church. It was a young community with the goal of building a new church. By 1977, he was involved in the long-range planning of building the Parish facilities. During his Presidency of the Parish Council in 1978, and in conjunction with other local Greek Orthodox leaders, they acquired land to build a new Church and Community Center.

In 1978, A.G. Spanos Companies established an endowed faculty award at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Mr. Filios served as administrator of this fund.

The Honorable Robert List, Governor of Nevada, appointed him to the State Contractors Board on which he served for three years until 1984.

In 1989, by appointment of the Clark County Commission, he served as a member of the Multifamily Council.
