James George Petheriotes Community/BusinessLeader Hellenic 1998 Recipient James Petheriotes was born in Houston, Texas August 7, 1921. His father had come to the United States from Greece before 1900 and settled in the Houston area before 1905. His mother come to the United States from Greece in 1914. Mr. Petheriotes attended Houston public schools and the University of Houston for three years before joining the U.S. Army. He serve four years during World War II as a military policeman in the Pacific Theater. After the War he continued his college education at the University of Houston where he graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. After graduation Mr. Petheriotes started his company, Petheriotes Brothers Coffee Company, with his brother Angelo. His company roasts and packages fine coffees for many restaurants and other companies in the Houston area. He is still actively operating his company today. He was active in the Texas Restaurant Association for 40 years, and has been instrumental in assisting and supporting other individuals in the Houston business community. He served on the Board of Directors of East End State Bank and Enterprise Bank for 25 years and was also involved in the cattle industry. Mr. Petheriotes has also been very active in the community. He followed in his fathers footsteps as the President of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church where he has been a lifelong active member of the congregation. He also served on the Church Board of Auditors for 25 years. Since 1942 he has been a member of the Order of AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association) and has served diligently in numerous capacities over the years. He has held various local, district and national offices culminating with his election to the office of Supreme Treasurer of the National Philanthropic Organization. Mr. Petheriotes has also been very active in local, state, and national politics, supporting various individuals, especially those of Hellenic descent.
