John J. Flynn, is the President of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers and a member of the Executive Board of the Union since 1987.  He had previously served as the Secretary-Treasurer from 1995 – May 1999, and as an Executive Vice President 1987 - 1995.  He served as the Assistant to the President for one year (1986) and the Director of Trade Jurisdiction for four years (1982 - 1986).  In his home state of Missouri, Mr. Flynn had served as a business agent (1971 - 1974), and later as the Business Manager of Local 1 (1974 - 1982).

President Flynn has served as a member of the General Presidents’ Committee on Contract Maintenance, the National Joint Heavy and Highway Committee, and the Associated General Contractors Basic Trades Committee.  He is a Trustee and Co-Chair of the International Masonry Institute (IMI), a labor-management trust established to enhance labor relations, apprenticeship and training, market development, and research and development in the masonry industry.  Mr. Flynn is also a Trustee and Co-Chair of the International Trowel Trades Pension Fund.

He has previously served on the following boards and committees:  President of the St. Louis Building and Construction Trades Council, the Board of Directors of “Pride” (St. Louis Construction Industry Labor Management Committee), the Legislative Advisory Committee of the St. Louis Regional Commerce and Growth Association, the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, the Board of Directors of the United Way of St. Louis, chairman of the Local 1 Pension Trust Fund, Health and Welfare Trust Fund and Vacation Trust Fund, and advisor to the St. Louis Masonry Institute and chairman of the St. Louis County Democratic Party.

Mr. Flynn was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri.  He is a graduate of DeAndreis High School in St. Louis, Missouri, and the Harvard University Trade Union Program.  Mr. Flynn began his career in the masonry industry in 1952 as an apprentice bricklayer.  Since that time he has worked as a journeyman, foreman and superintendent on all types of masonry construction jobs.  Mr. Flynn and his wife, Joyce, who live in Vienna, Virginia, have been married for forty-three years.  They have three children, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
