Jose S. Suquet Business Leader Cuban 1997 Recipient Jose Suquet is Executive Vice President and Chief Agency Officer of The Equitable Companies, Inc. In his position as Chief Agency Officer, Mr. Suquet is responsible for agency operations, which includes management of the companys home office marketing, sales support and distribution functions, encompassing 80 nationwide sales offices, as well as over 7,600 career agents. After joining Equitable in 1979 as an agent in New York, Mr. Suquet became district manager one year later, and within four years he was the seventh ranked district manager nationally out of 700. In 1985, Mr. Suquet moved to Florida where he headed up Equitables consolidated South Florida office, which later became the Suquet/Musibay Agency. He was general manager of the agency, with 250 agents, until he was named to his present position in August 1994. Mr. Suquet was responsible for building one of the companys most successful agencies. Since 1986 the Agency earned recognition for its outstanding performance, and won Equitables prestigious Presidents Trophy eight times, which is the measure of overall profitability, productivity and management effectiveness. The agency was ranked among the top one percent in the country by the industrys General Agents and Managers Association (GAMA), and earned the Associations Master Agency Award seven consecutive times. Recognized as an innovator in the training and continuing education of the agency force, Mr. Suquet has lectured and authored numerous articles on recruiting, marketing and management development. In 1996 he was elected to the board of Directors of LIMRA International. A strong believer in community service, Mr. Suquet pioneered the concept of "civic marketing" at Equitable. Among his many activities in Miami, he served on the boards of directors, boards of trustees and/or the executive committees for the Beacon Council, United Way, Coral Gables and Greater Miami Chambers of Commerce, Baptist Hospital Foundation, Florida International University and the South Florida Performing Arts Center Foundation. Born in Havana, Cuba, and raised in New York City, Mr. Suquet attended Fordham University and received an MBA from the University of Miami in 1990. Mr. Suquet and his family reside in New York.
