  John W. Johnstone, Jr., who for nearly a decade served as Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of the Olin Corporation, remains a member of Olin's Board of Directors and is serving as Chairman of the Board's Finance Committee. Mr. Johnstone retired as Chairman on May 1, 1996.

  Elected to the post of Chief Executive Officer in April 1987 and to Chairman of the Board in July 1988, Mr. Johnstone formerly served as President, Chief Operating Officer, and Executive Vice President of Olin. He joined Olin in May 1979 as Vice President and General Manager of the Chemicals Group's industrial products department. In March 1980, he became Senior Vice President of the Chemicals Group and was elected a corporate Vice President. He later became President of the Chemicals Group.

  Prior to joining Olin, Mr. Johnstone was President of the Airco Alloys Division of Airco, Inc., a position he held for three years. Before that, he served 22 years with Hooker Chemicals and Plastics Corp., where in March 1973 he was made Group Vice President with responsibility for all domestic and international operating divisions. Mr. Johnstone's early career at Hooker was in sales and marketing. He assumed general management responsibilities in 1968 and became Vice President and General Manager of the Electrochemicals Division in 1972.

  Born in Brooklyn, New York on November 19, 1932, Mr. Johnstone is a graduate of Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York with a B.A. degree in chemistry and physics. In recognition of his long-standing support of Hartwick and of his distinguished career in business, Mr. Johnstone received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Hartwick in 1990. He also is a graduate of the Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program.

  Mr. Johnstone serves as a Director of Fortune Brands, Phoenix Home Life Mutual Insurance Co., McDermott International RCT, Inc., and Golden Bear Specialties Oil, Inc. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of Hartwick College, where in 1996 he was named Chairman. He is a past Chairman of both the Chemical Manufacturers Association and the Soap and Detergent Association, past Vice Chairman of the Conference Board, and in 1993-94 he led The Business Roundtable's Superfund reform effort.

  Mr. Johnstone's offices are at Olin's headquarters in Norwalk, Connecticut.
