   John Ryan is Chancellor of the State University of New York System. In June 1994, Dr. Ryan served as consultant on the university organization and management for Papua New Guinea Commission for Higher Education.

   From May 1991 until November 1992, Dr. Ryan served as Senior Counsel to the Administrator for Management training in Central and Eastern Europe at the Agency for International Development. In 1989, he served as Interim President of Florida Atlantic University, and in 1994 he served as Interim President at the University of Maryland at Baltimore.

   Dr. Ryan was appointed President of Indiana University on January 26, 1971 and served in that capacity until August 31, 1987.

   DEGREES AND HONORS

   Dr. Ryan holds Ph.D. and M.A. degrees from the Indiana University and a B.A. degree from the University of Utah.

   Dr. Ryan has received thirteen honorary degrees including: D.LITT., College of St. Thomas; LLD., University of Notre Dame; LLD., Oakland City College; LLD., St., Joseph’s College; LLD., Hanover College; LLD., DePauw University of Evansville; LLD., Wabash College; P.A.D., National Institute of Development Administration (Bangkok, Thailand); LLD. University of Maryland at Baltimore; LL.D., Indiana University.

   Other recognitions include: Kappa Sigma Man of the Year (1975); Kappa Sigma Fraternity Worthy Grand Master (1985-87); Indiana Academy Member (1980), Knight Commander, Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem (1981); Horatio Alger Award (1981); Indiana Public Broadcasting Society Edmund F. Ball Award (1984); Knight Commander (Second Class) of the most Exalted Order of the White Elephant conferred by the King of Thailand (1986); National Interfraternity Conference Silver Medal (1986); Columbia Club Harrison Medallion (1987); University of California Medal (1987); The Benjamin P. Cheney Medal by Eastern Washington University (1987) Order of the Star by the Hungarian People’s Republic (1987); Order of the Fraternity Excellence Award, Fraternity Executives Association (1988); Distinguished Alumni Service Award, Indiana University (1989).

   ORGANIZATIONS

   Dr. Ryan is active in the American Society for Public Administration, the American Political Science Association, the Association for Asian Studies, and the National Academy of Public Administration. He served as President of the North Central Association of College and Secondary Schools.

   He has been associated with several higher education organizations including: Association of American Universities (chairman); Public Broadcasting Services (vice chairman, Board of Governors); National Associations of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (board of Directors); Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities; American Council on Education (Board of Directors).

   Dr. Ryan was the first chairman of the President’s Commission of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and later served as a consultant to the Presidents Commission. He was also chairman of the National Advisory Board on International Educational Programs, which advised the Secretary of Education on Title VI matters.

   CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

   During 1954-55, Dr. Ryan was research analyst in the Department of Revenue for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He was assisted in establishing the graduate public administration program at the University of Thammsat in Bangkok, Thailand from 1955-57. From 1958-62, he taught political science and was associate director of the Bureau of Government at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In 1962-63, he was executive assistant to the president of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He served for two years as vice president for academic affairs at Arizona State University at Tempe, and he was first chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Boston from 1965-68. In July 1968, Dr. Ryan returned to Indiana University to become vice president and chancellor for regional campuses. Three years later he was named president of Indiana University until he retire in 1987. In 1996, he agreed to serve as Interim Chancellor of the State University of New York System. He was asked to take on the position of Chancellor effective April, 1997.

   Dr. John W. Ryan was born on August 12, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois. In 1949 he married D. Patricia Goodday. They have three children: Kathleen Elynne , Kevin Dennis Mitchell Ryan, and Kerrick Charles Casey Ryan.
