Kamil Kubik Artist Czech 1997 Recipient Kamil Kubik received his Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 1997. He was born on February 9, 1930 in Czechoslovakia to an artistic family. Kubik studied art first in Prague but, when the Communists seized power in 1948, he escaped and started a long journey around the world. He has since studied and worked in five continents. Kubik painted stage sets in Sydney, Australia and designed settings for the celebration of the anniversary of Canberra, the capital. He painted famous personalities in London and San Francisco. Originally interested in figure and portrait painting, he now paints mostly street scenes. He loves doing this because it brings him closest to the real people and to Kamil Kubik the real people he knows are the street sweepers, industrial magnates, office clerks, and truck drivers as well as royalty and heads of state. Kamil Kubik paints outdoors in the true impressionist tradition. The inspiration comes directly from ever-changing nature, yet it is his own vision which he does not compromise nor does he follow trends. Kubik is now a resident of New York City the city that is the greatest challenge to creative people and also the source of unending inspiration. Two of his paintings have recently been selected for the covers of Reader's Digest and MD Magazine.
