P. Kalemkeris M.D. Dr.
Kirk P. Kalemkeris M.D., an oncologist specializing in cancer surgery,
pursued his medical studies at Aristotelian University Medical School. Born
in Thessaloniki, Dr. Kalemkeris attended the Saint Anastasia Seminary in
Chalkidiki for four years before going to medical school in Thessaloniki.
He studied at the Aristotelian University for three years, but had
to interrupt his studies to serve the Greek Army during the Greek Civil
War, after which he returned to Thessaloniki to complete the 6-year
program.
After graduating from medical school, he started a general practice
in Greece and applied to the University of Kentucky as an exchange doctor.
He completed 5 years of training for general surgery there, and he
then attended the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine
in Philadelphia and became a fellow there.
He then spent one year in Walpole, Massachusetts to specialize in
oncological surgery. Dr.
Kalemkeris is a member of the several medical associations:
the Medical Society of Greece, the Connecticut Medical Association,
the New Jersey Medical Association, the New York Medical Association, the
American Medical Association and the Hellenic American Medical
Association.
He is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr.
Kalemkeris has received several awards for his outstanding service and
dedication to the medical profession, to include the 15 Year Service Award
of the American Cancer Society of New Jersey (1981), the Professional
Service Award from the Medical Society of New Jersey “for upholding the
outstanding service and tradition in providing healthcare (1986),” the
Certificate of Merit from the American Cancer Society of New Jersey
(1987), a Resolution of Honor New Jersey State Assembly “paying tribute
to his meritorious career record of service and commitment exemplifying
the finest qualities of citizenship and professionality (1990),” and the
Distinguished Physicians and Surgeons Award from the Pascack Valley
Hospital in Westwood, New Jersey “for 32 years of dedication and
commitment (1995).”
He also received the Freedom and Justice Award from the Cyprus
Federation of America (1987) and the Plato Award from AHEPA (1994). Dr.
Kalemkeris is a founding member and past president of Saint Nicholas
Church in Wyckoff, New Jersey.
He has served as a member of the Hellenic College/Holy Cross Board
of Trustees.
He also was the president of the Hellenic American Congress of New
Jersey. He
is a life member of the New Jersey Diocese Council; a member of the
Orthodox Crusade for the Holy Sepulchre (so honored by Patriarch
Benedictos I of Jerusalem in 1979); and has been serving as Regional
Commander of the Archons for the last 22 years.
He also received the archdiocese Medal of Saint Paul in 1985. The author of articles in several highly respected medical journals, Dr. Kalemkeris currently resides in Hohokus, New Jersey with his wife Lee. They have two daughters, Claire and Diane.
