Lee Liu was born in Hunan, China and immigrated to Brazil with his parents. In 1953, he left Brazil to attend Iowa State University where he earned a BSEE degree in 1957. After graduation, he joined Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. as an engineer and held a number of professional management and executive positions prior to his current appointment.

  In addition to serving as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of IES Industries, Mr. Liu also serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of IES Utilities, the major subsidiary of IES Industries.

  Mr. Liu is active in both the utility industry and in local community service and economic development. He was selected Iowa’s 1989 Business Leader of the Year by the Des Moines Register. He also received the 1989 Achievement Award for Business and Industry from the Organization of Chinese Americans, the 1991 Achievement Award in Engineering Management from the Chinese-American Engineers and Scientists Association, and a Community Recognition Award for his work as Chairman of the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce Priority One campaign. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce, Edison Electric Institute and the Electric Power Research Institute. He also served as the Chairman of the Iowa Business Council, a member of the Advisory Board of United Way, the Executive Advisory Council for the School of Business at the University of Northern Iowa, and the Advisory Committee for the Engineering College at Iowa State University. In 1984 he received the ISU Citation for Engineering Achievement. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi Association, a National Engineering Honor Society; and in September of 1996, he received the prestigious Marston Medal award for outstanding achievement in engineering from the Iowa State University’s College of Engineering. In May of 1997, he was awarded the Excellence 2000 Award for Business from the United States Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce.

  Mr. Liu is currently a member of the Board of Directors for Eastman Chemical Company, Hon Industries, the Principal Financial Group, McLeod, Inc., and a member of the Board of Trustees for Mercy Medical Center. He serves as President of Mercy Care Management, Inc. And is also a member of the University of Iowa College of Business Board of Visitors. He was a member of the Iowa Utility Association and Chairman of the Iowa Business Council that consists of Chief Executive Officers of major Iowa-based industries.
