Louis J. Cappelli Business Leader Italian 1998 Recipient Louis J. Cappelli is Chairman of Sterling National Bank/Sterling Bancorp, whose shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE:STL). Starting as a 18-year-old mail room messenger at Sterling, he rose through the ranks to his current position. A native New Yorker, served in the U.S. Army from 1951-53. Graduated from the City College of New York in 1958, received a bachelors degree in Business Administration. Active in civil, charitable, ecumenical and other organizations. A member of American Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (Knight of Malta); Cardinals Committee of the Laity; Columbus Citizens Foundation; Alumni Association of CCNY; Development Corporation for Israel Bonds; Economic Club of New York; New York City Board of Education Audit Advisory Committee; New York Friars Club; Saint Josephs Finance and Administration Committee; United Jewish Appeal-Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York; University Club and Westchester Country Club. Involved in numerous industry-related organizations, A member of American Bankers Association; Director, Commercial Finance Association; Financemens Club of New York; Federal Reserve Bank of New York Nominating Committee; Director, New York State Bankers Association. Former director, Fashion Institute of Technology- Consiglio dIstituto of Polimoda. A former member of Mayor Dinkins New York City Council of Economic Advisors. Previously active in Meals on Wheels (Westchester, NY); the Boy Scouts of America; Yonkers Community Relations Board; American Management Association; New York Institute of Credit; Director of New York University Management Decision Laboratory; and Director of Long Island Universitys "The Business Game" graduate program. In addition, served as "Principal for a Day" at alma mater, William Howard Taft High School (Bronx, NY). Volunteers at St. Francis Xavier Church (New York, NY) and the Dutch Reformed Church (Westchester,NY), serving meals and distributing clothing to the homeless and others in need. Honored with the Gates of Jerusalem Medal from State of Israel Bonds; Bronze Award from the Financial World Magazine "Top Chief Executive"; Human Relations Award from the Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith; Leadership in Business Award from Coalition of Italo-American Associations, Inc.
