Leon Machiz BusinessLeader Russian 1998 Recipient Mr. Machiz was born in New York City in 1924. He attended Cooper Union College where he majored in mathematics and engineering. His many hobbies include harness race horse racing, chess backgammon, tennis and golf. Mr. Machiz is also involved in a number of charities including the Jackie Robinson Foundation. He sits as a member of the Board of Trustees at the North Shore University Hospital, Long Island. Mr. Machiz founded Time Electronic Sales in 1952 and Electro Air in 1957. Upon acquisition of these companies by Avnet, Inc. in 1968, he joined Avnet as a Senior Vice President and member of its Board of Directors. He subsequently became Secretary of Avnet and a member of its Executive Committee. In July 1980, Mr. Machiz was named President of Avnet, Inc. In 1985, the titles of Vice Chairman of the Board and Chief Operating Officer of Avnet were added to the Presidency. Mr. Machiz was elected to his present position as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Avnet on December 30, 1988. Avnet is a global company listed on the New York stock Exchange with volume in excess of $5.25 billion a year. Over $1 billion of this volume is transacted in Europe and Asia. Avnet is one of the largest distributors of electronic components, computers and peripheral equipment. Mr. Machiz and his wife Lorraine have three children and seven grandchildren.
