Mel Harris Business Leader Russian 1994 Recipient Mel Harris became the President and Chief Executive Officer of Inter-American Group, Inc. in April 1984. He organized and established an insurance brokerage company for the purpose of handling the total insurance needs of major national and multi-national corporations. In January of 1988, Inter-American Group, Inc. and Alexander & Alexander, one of the world's largest retail insurance brokerage organizations, were merged, making Inter-American Group a wholly-owned subsidiary of A&A, and Mr. Harris one of A&A's major individual shareholders and its largest producer. The merger enabled Inter-American Group, Inc. to enhance its global service capabilities on its multi-national corporate accounts. During his tenure with A&A, Mr. Harris served as Vice-Chairman of Alexander & Alexander of New York, Inc. At the end of his contract period of February 1992, Mr. Harris left his position with Alexander & Alexander and joined Jardine Insurance Brokers New York Inc. as Vice Chairman. Mr. Harris is presently Chairman & CEO of Preferred Employers Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: PEGI). Preferred is a Managing General Agent for American International Group and writes workers compensation and property/liability insurance through safety group dividend programs for the fast food and convenience store industries. He also serves as President of International Insurance Group, Inc. an insurance brokerage company located in Miami, Florida, and New York City and works in association with Kaye Insurance Associates, L.P. Mr. Harris is a major producer for American International Group, the leading U.S.-Based international insurance organization and the nation's largest underwriter of commercial and industrial coverages. He maintains a very close working relationship with them and many other major carriers. Mr. Harris currently serves on various philanthropic boards including the National Parkinson Foundation, Hebrew Home for the Aged at Riverdale in New York, and the Yeshiva University -Sy Syms School of Business. He is also a Founder of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. and of the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, Florida. In addition to the above Boards and Foundations, Mr. Harris is also active in the Juveniles Diabetes Foundation and the UJA Federation.
