Nicholas A. Spilotro Educator/Labor Leader Italian 1997 Recipient Nicholas Spilotro graduated from City College of New York in 1957 and served as a Teacher of Social Studies in the New York City high schools for 34 years. He retired in 1991. Nicholas also served as UFT District Representative for Manhattan High Schools and continues to serve as Chairperson of the UFT's Italian American Studies Committee. He was a Project Director and contributing author of the STUDY GUIDE ON ITALIAN AMERICANS. Nicholas also authored a LESSON PLAN ON HUMAN RIGHTS: SACCO AND VANZETTI, and a BIBLIOGRAPHY ON ITALIAN AMERICANS. (All of these titles were published by the United Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO.) In addition, Nicholas Spilotro served as Consultant to the State Education Department on Italian American Affairs and served as an advisor on the State Education department's ITAL AMERICANS-LOOKING BACK/MOVING FORWARD project that resulted in the first state-wide curriculum guide on Italian Americans ever published by the State of New York. Nicholas currently serves as a consultant on Community and Educational Affairs to the New York State Conference of Italian American State Legislators; and in this capacity, has participated in many of their recent conferences. He has lectured extensively on the Italian American Experience, Immigrant History and Labor History at Fordham University, Jersey City State College, Montclair State Teachers' college, at the School of Labor and Industrial Relations of Cornell University, at the National Conference on Italian Americans sponsored by the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute at CUNY, at Ellis Island, at the Italian Cultural Institute, at the Scuola Magistrale Maria Montessori in Rome, Italy, and before many other educational and community groups. Nicholas has also lectured extensively on the Italian rescue of Jews during the Holocaust. Nicholas continues to be active in the educational field through his participation in Drop Out Prevention programs sponsored by the Board of Education of the City of New York. In addition to these activities, and in recognition of his contributions to the Italian/Italian-American communities, the Italian Government bestowed upon Nicholas the rank of Cavaliere in the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy. At the moment, Nicholas is a member of the Order of the Sons of Italy in America, the American Italian Historical Association, the Columbia Association of the Board of Education, the Italian Club of Staten Island, the Organization of American Historians, the Navy League, the Council of the National Foundation, and is a member of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance. In addition, he serves as the New York City Central Labor Council's liaison to the School-to-Work program.
