Orin R. Smith Business Leader English 1998 Recipient Orin Smith is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Engelhard Corporation. Mr. Smith, 62, began his career with Engelhard in 1977 as Senior Vice President, Research and New Business Development with the former Minerals & Chemicals Division. Since that time, Mr. Smith has held key corporate and divisional management posts, including Executive Vice President of Engelhard Corporation and President of the Minerals & Chemicals Division. He was President and Chief Executive Officer of the corporation from 1984 through 1994. Mr. Smith was born in Newark, NJ on August 13, 1935. He was graduated from Brown University, Providence, RI in 1957 with honors and received a Master of Business Administration degree from Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ where he was graduated valedictorian of the Class of 1964. Mr. Smith received an Honorary Doctorate in Economics from Centenary College in 1991. In May 1994, he was conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree by Monmouth College. After several years as a United States naval officer, he joined Allied Chemical Corporation in 1959 where for ten years he served in various management capacities in the area of sales, marketing, and manufacturing. Mr. Smith moved to J.T. Baker, a division of Richardson-Merrell, Phillipsburg, NJ in 1969 as Marketing Manager. He was appointed Director of Marketing, and then Director of Sales and Marketing for that firm. In 1972, he joined M&T Chemicals, a subsidiary of American Can Company, Greenwich, CT, as Director of Sales and Marketing, becoming General Manager of New Business in 1974. He served as President from 1975 to 1977. Mr. Smith is a Director of the Ingersoll-Rand Company, Minorco, The Perkin-Elmer Corporation, Summit Bancorp, Summit Bank, and Vulcan Materials Company. He is also a Director of the New Jersey State Chamber of Commerce. He is First Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Centenary College and member of the Board of Overseers of the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He is a member of the Boards of Trustees of the Manufacturers Alliance (MAPI), the Institute for Technological Advancement, the Henry H. Kessler Foundation, and a Trustee of Plimoth Plantation. Mr. Smith is a past Director of the Louisiana Land and Exploration Company, Chemical Manufacturers Association and past Director-at-Large of the University of Maine Pulp and Paper Foundation. He is also a past Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Independent College Fund of New Jersey, an organization representing 15 independent New Jersey colleges. In addition, Mr. Smith is a past director of the New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Company, the New Jersey Reinsurance Company, the New Jersey Business and Industry Association, and past Trustee of the Newark Museum and Welkind Rehabilitation Hospital. In September 1993, Mr. Smith was honored with the distinguished Citizens Award by the Watchung Area Council of Boy Scouts of America. He received Monmouth Colleges 1986 Distinguished Business Leaders Award which recognizes distinguished contributions to the state and nation by a business or corporate leader. In 1985, he was named Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by the alumni of Seton Hall Universitys School of Business. Mr. Smith is married to Dr. Stephanie M. Bennett-Smith, who is President of Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ. They reside in Bedminster, NJ. Mr. Smith has two daughters, Lindsay and Robin Smith and a stepson, Brendan Bennett.
