Richard Parrillo, Sr. Chairman & CEO United Automobile Insurance Group 2008 Recipient Richard P. Parrillo, Sr. was born in Oak Park, IL. He attended Oliver Wendel Holmes Grammar School and the Oak Park High School. In 1960, he graduated from the University of Colorado, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree. Prior to his entry into the insurance market, Richard Parrillo became the youngest national bank president in the United States at the age of 25. From 1963 to 1982, Mr. Parrillo was active in both the insurance and banking industries, but in the latter year, he decided to devote all of his efforts to his insurance business. In 1995, he moved to Florida, and as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the United Automobile Insurance Group (“UAIG”), he instituted a plan to establish UAIG as one of the premier automobile insurance operations in the United States. Having formed the Safeway Insurance Company forty-two years prior in Chicago, IL, Richard Parrillo utilized his expertise to lead the United Automobile Insurance Group (“UAIG”) so that it is now the largest, privately owned property and casualty insurance group in the country. UAIG’s flagship insurer, the United Automobile Insurance Company Group (“United Auto”) is one of the largest automobile insurance companies in the country with annual sales of over 400 million dollars. UAIG’s family of companies also includes the Argus Fire and Casualty Insurance Company, a Florida domiciled homeowners insurer, United Group Underwriters, a national managing general agency and the United Premium Finance Company. As a leader in the insurance industry, Richard Parrillo has expanded the automobile insurance operations of United Auto from its domicile state of Florida into Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas and Utah. As Richard Parrillo’s vision for United Auto unfolds, UAIG will transform itself from a regional company to a national operation by the end of this decade. Factoring in a twenty percent growth rate per year, UAIG will be approaching $1.0 billion in premiums by the year 2010. With Mr. Parrillo’s business expertise and leadership, this goal is assured. Richard Parrillo is very active in many civic and charitable causes. He was the President of the Special Olympics, which began in Chicago and was later taken over by the Kennedy Foundation. The Special Olympics has grown into a worldwide event allowing special children the opportunity to participate in sports. As a result of his initial leadership, Mr. Parrillo was honored as “Man of the Year” for this organization. He also served on Illinois Counsel for Health and Fitness to which he was appointed by the Governor. As an active civic leader, he has been a director of the Lions Club of Chicago. In 1998, he was also acknowledged as the “Man of the Year” of the Boys’ Town of Italy for his special contributions. Richard Parrillo has also been the Chairman of the Columbus Day Parade in Chicago, IL. This event is one of the largest parades anywhere in the world. He was Chairman of the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans for 10 years, which is an umbrella organization that oversees forty different Italian civic organizations. Richard Parrillo has five wonderful children following in his footsteps. Mr. Parrillo is gracious, honest and highly respected in the business community and all charitable organizations.
