Richard A. Smith is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Real Estate division of Cendant Corporation, the world’s largest franchiser of residential and commercial real estate brokerage offices. 

Appointed chairman and CEO in 1996, Smith has not only overseen the significant organic growth of Cendant’s real estate companies, he has also played a leading role in the creation of three new companies in his tenure.  During 1997-1998, he was responsible for consolidating three of the relocation industry’s largest players into a single new entity, Cendant Mobility.  In late 1997, he was instrumental in the creation of NRT Incorporated,  a joint venture between Cendant and Apollo Management L.P.  which has since acquired more than 100 brokerages and is by far the largest owner and operator of residential real estate offices in the nation. 

In 1999 he spearheaded the creation of move.com, a new vertical portal that integrates and enhances all of Cendant’s real estate businesses through a central and consumer-focused web site.
