Richard J. Ciecka Business Leader Polish 1995 Recipient Richard J. Ciecka was appointed Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mutu al of America Life Insurance Company in February 1993. Mutual of America is on e of the country ' s soundest life insurance companies serving health, education, humanitarian and governmental subdivisions throughout the United States. Until recently, a native of Chicago, Illinois, Mr. Ciecka attended DePaul University there, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a Juris Doctor degree in law. Mr. Ciecka began his legal career with the United States Department of Justice, serving for six years as a Special Agent with the F.B.I. and Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois where he was Chief of the Special Prosecution Division, which investigated and prosecuted political corruption. After leaving the Department of Justice, Mr. Ciecka entered into the private practice of law, with the firm of O'Keefe, Ashenden, Lyons & Ward, specializing in corporate litigation. Prior to his appointment as Vice Chairman, Mr. Ciecka served as a Director of Mutual of America since 1980. He has served on the Executive, Long Range Planning, Nominating, Foundation, and Compensation Committees, and acted as Chairman of the Law Committee of the Board. Currently, Mr. Ciecka is a member of the Illinois Bar Association and The National Committee on American Foreign Policy. Mr. Ciecka also serves as a member of the Boards of the Josephson Institute of Ethics, The Drucker Foundation, Manhattanville College, Rabbi Marc H. Tannenbaum Foundation, Inc., Police Athletic League, and the U.S. Army War College Foundation. Mr. Ciecka received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in May 1995.
