Ronald K. Richey Business Leader Swedish/Scottish/Irish/German 1998 Recipient Ron Richey is a native of Erie, Kansas, He is a graduate of Washburn University and Washburn University Law School in Topeka, Kansas. He is a member of the American and Oklahoma Bar Associations. He served as an attorney with the Kansas Insurance Department and later as Legislative Manager for the American Mutual Insurance Alliance of Chicago, Illinois. In 1964, he joined Globe Life and Accident Insurance Company in Oklahoma City as Vice President and General Counsel. Richey was elected Executive Vice President of Globe in 1970. Following the death of John Singletary, Globes Chairman and founder, Mr. Richey was elected Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. He served in that capacity until 1980 when Globe Life was purchased by Torchmark Corporation. At that time, Richey was named President and Chief Executive Officer of Globe and a Director of Torchmark. In April 1982, Mr. Richey was elected President of Torchmark Corporation. Torchmark is located in Birmingham, Alabama and is a diversified insurance and financial services holding company whose principal subsidiaries are United American Insurance Company in McKinney; Texas, Globe Life and Accident Insurance Company, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Liberty National Life Insurance Company, Birmingham, Alabama; and Waddell & Reed, Inc., Kansas City, Missouri. On January 1, 1985, Mr. Richey was named President and Chief Executive Officer of Torchmark Corporation. Mr. Richey is a Director of Waddell & Reed Financial, Inc. and United Group of Mutual Funds, Kansas City, Missouri. He currently serves as a Director of Full House Resorts, Inc., San Diego, California. Mr. Richey is also a Director of VESTA Insurance Group, Inc., Birmingham, Alabama. He has served as President of the Association of Oklahoma Life Insurance Companies and is a member and director of numerous Oklahoma City civic and cultural boards. Mr. Richey currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center and is a former director of the American Council of Life Insurance and the Health Insurance Association of America. Mr. Richey and his wife, Florence, have three childrenLinda Graves, First Lady of the State of Kansas; Robert, an executive with United American Insurance Company in McKinney, Texas and Christopher, an associate with Brandes Investment Partners in San Diego, California. The Richeys have five grandchildren. Ron Richey is a member of Shoal Creek Country Club and Old Overton Club in Birmingham, Alabama; Kissing Camels Club, Garden of the Gods Club, and Cheyenne Mountain Country Club in Colorado Springs, Colorado; Rancho La Quinta Country Club in La Quinta, California and Horseshoe Bay Resort and Conference Club in Horseshoe Bay, Texas. In 1993, Mr. Richey received the Distinguished Service Award from Washburn Alumni Association, Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas. He was named "Kansan of DistinctionBusiness" in 1987 by the Topeka Capital Journal. Mr. Richey received the honorary Doctor of Commerce Degree, as a distinguished alumni from the Washburn University in May 1989. The Wall Street Transcript recognized Ron Richey as the outstanding insurance executive in the industry for 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991. In 1989, Financial World named Ron as the First Place Winner (Insurance: Life/Health) in the CEO of the decade competition. In 1990, he was chosen as the First Place Winner within the insurance: Life/Health category of Financial Worlds Chief Executive Officer of the Year competition. In 1991, Financial World selected Mr. Richey as the Silver Award Winner in the Finance Industry in Financial Worlds CEO of the Year competition. In 1992, Mr. Richey was the Bronze Award Winner in the Insurance, Life and Health category for the CEO of the Year completion; and again in 1993, he was also selected as the Bronze Award Winner in the Insurance-diversified category for the CEO of the Year competition. Currently, Mr. Richey is retired from Torchmark Corporation but continues to serve on its Board of Directors as Chairman of the Executive Committee.
