Salvatore "Sonny" Grosso
Business/Community Leader
Italian
1997 Recipient

As a member of the New York Police Department, Sonny Grosso rose to the ranks of First-Grade Detective faster than anyone in the Department history. He ended his 20 year career with more arrests and convictions than any detective up to that time. Among his many famous cases were -The French Connection, The Murder at the Met and the police wars against The Black Liberation Army.

While still on the Force, Grosso worked as a technical advisor on a number of feature films including The French Connection and The GodFather. He co-authored three books and wrote one screen play (The 7-Ups with Roy Scheider).

In 1980, Sonny turned to TV production and, since then, his company Grosso/Jacobson Productions, has produced over 600 hours of prime-time TV. Among his shows: Top Cops; True Blue; Counterstrike and Night Heat. Among his TV movies: Remember Me, Out of the Darkness and Trackdown.

Through it all, Sonny has remained true to his Italian roots. He keeps a life that thrives under old traditional ways - church on Sunday, cemetery visits on weekends, family gatherings in his favorite restaurants. He donates to Italian causes and gives out an annual award to deserving Italian American Police officers at ceremonies held in the Bronx and he contributes towards the education of inner-city school children at Cardinal Hayes High School.

Sonny has never left his roots; rather, he has grown with them. He is an Italian American first, a cop second, a producer third and a trusted and valued friend always.
