Simon S. Lee President and CEO STG, Inc. South Korean 2003 Recipient
Simon
S. Lee, President and CEO, came to the U.S. from South Korea in 1979.
Now an American citizen, Mr. Lee began his career as an engineer,
leading him to senior technical positions with various technology firms in the
Washington area. By 1986, Mr. Lee
founded STG as Software Technology Group, to address the
growing demand for high quality, Information Technology (IT) support services. His
vision for the company came to realization in 1993 when the Department of
State awarded STG its first large contract.
After the World Trade Center bombings that year, the Department of
State asked STG to develop the software for a global visa tracking system
used to track individuals who posed a terrorist threat. By the mid-90s, STG had grown its presence in both
civilian and defense agencies, honing competencies in information
assurance, telecommunications, and systems integration.
In 2001, Government Computer News ranked STG as the largest
contractor at the Department of State. Mr. Lee has led the companys
evolution to a $170 million provider of performance-based IT, engineering,
and scientific services with clients spanning across government and
industry. Headquartered in
Fairfax, Virginia, STG has 1,700 employees and consultants operating in over 250
locations worldwide. During 2002, industry recognized
STG as a top competitor: In
May, Washington Technology ranked STG as the #1 debuting contractor on
their list of Top Federal Prime Contractors in the Nation.
In June and in August respectively, Washington Business Journal
noted STG as one of the fastest growing private companies in the region
and the ninth largest technology employer in the metropolitan area. In
November, STG became one of only 10% of U.S. firms to achieve ISO
9001:2000 certification to ensure excellence and consistency in the
delivery of their services. Again
in November, Governor Warner applauded STGs growth and contributions to
the state of Virginias economy by issuing a press release from his
office. In
May 2003, Mr. Lee was awarded the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of
Honor fellow past recipients include six U.S. Presidents, Members of
Congress, and Nobel Prize winners. In
June 2001, Mr. Lee was the recipient of the Pan-Asian American Excellence
Award, which promotes the many accomplishments of Asian Americans.
Fellow honorees include Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, and Grammy
Award winner, Yo-Yo Ma. In
1998 and 1999, Mr. Lee was a finalist for the Ernst & Young
Entrepreneur of the Year award.
In 1998, The U.S. Small Business Administration gave Mr. Lee the
ultimate honor for entrepreneurs by selecting him as the areas Small
Business Person of the Year. Mr. Lee holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering
from Korea University along with many technical certifications.
