South Korean
2003 Recipient

Simon S. Lee, President and CEO, came to the U.S. from South Korea in 1979.  Now an American citizen, Mr. Lee began his career as an engineer, leading him to senior technical positions with various technology firms in the Washington area.  By 1986, Mr. Lee founded STG as Software Technology Group, to address the growing demand for high quality, Information Technology (IT) support services.

His vision for the company came to realization in 1993 when the Department of State awarded STG its first large contract.  After the World Trade Center bombings that year, the Department of State asked STG to develop the software for a global visa tracking system used to track individuals who posed a terrorist threat.  By the mid-90’s, STG had grown its presence in both civilian and defense agencies, honing competencies in information assurance, telecommunications, and systems integration.  In 2001, Government Computer News ranked STG as the largest contractor at the Department of State.

Mr. Lee has led the company’s evolution to a $170 million provider of performance-based IT, engineering, and scientific services with clients spanning across government and industry.  Headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia, STG has 1,700 employees and consultants operating in over 250 locations worldwide.

During 2002, industry recognized STG as a top competitor:  In May, Washington Technology ranked STG as the #1 debuting contractor on their list of Top Federal Prime Contractors in the Nation.  In June and in August respectively, Washington Business Journal noted STG as one of the fastest growing private companies in the region and the ninth largest technology employer in the metropolitan area.  In November, STG became one of only 10% of U.S. firms to achieve ISO 9001:2000 certification to ensure excellence and consistency in the delivery of their services.  Again in November, Governor Warner applauded STG’s growth and contributions to the state of Virginia’s economy by issuing a press release from his office.

In May 2003, Mr. Lee was awarded the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor— fellow past recipients include six U.S. Presidents, Members of Congress, and Nobel Prize winners.  In June 2001, Mr. Lee was the recipient of the Pan-Asian American Excellence Award, which promotes the many accomplishments of Asian Americans.  Fellow honorees include Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, and Grammy Award winner, Yo-Yo Ma.  In 1998 and 1999, Mr. Lee was a finalist for the Ernst & Young “Entrepreneur of the Year” award.  In 1998, The U.S. Small Business Administration gave Mr. Lee the ultimate honor for entrepreneurs by selecting him as the area’s Small Business Person of the Year.

Mr. Lee holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Korea University along with many technical certifications.
