Thomas E. Hales Chairman, President & CEO Union State Bank Italian / Irish 2003 Recipient
Mr. Hales is Chairman, President and CEO of U.S.B. Holding
Company, Inc., and its wholly owned subsidiary, Union State Bank.
U.S.B. Holding Co., Inc. is listed on the New York Stock Exchange
under the symbol UBH, and is a $2 billion bank holding company. Mr. Hales joined Union Bank in 1982, thirteen years after the
Bank was chartered in Rockland County.
When Mr. Hales arrived, Union State Bank had two offices, $23
million in assets and twenty-five employees.
Presently, the Bank enjoys the #1 deposit market share position in
Westchester County, where it is a major real estate lender.
Today the Bank employs over 325 people, and we have 26 locations
throughout the Metro New York Area. U.S.B.
had its 23rd consecutive year of record earnings. Recently, U.S.B. Holding Co., Inc. was listed by the American
Banker as one of the top fifty Most Efficient Bank Holding
Companies, out of the top 500 largest bank holding companies in
America. As of November 2000, U.S.B. acquired branch locations in
Stanford, Connecticut and New York City.
At $2 billion, the Bank is one of the largest New York State
chartered, independent, community banks.
There is no initiative that occurs in either of the Counties where
Union State has not taken a leadership position.
Union State Bank has often been recognized as a leader in assuming
corporate responsibilities, not only in New York, but also throughout the
U.S.A. In an effort to make a significant contribution to the
victims of September 11, 2001 tragedy, Union State Bank formed the U.S.A./I.C.B.A.
Disaster Relief Fund. Funds
were contributed by Bank employees, as well as banks within the
Independent Community Bankers of America.
Through I.C.B.A. we were able to collect funds on a larger scale
and U.S.B. was responsible for overseeing the Fund and taking care of the
distribution of the monies. Union State Bank established the first Banking Development
District in the State of New York by opening a much needed banking office
and Business Resource Center in the Village of Spring Valley. The Bank provides at least three financial literacy workshops
per month at the Resource Center. Through
its Spring Valley Advisory Board, U.S.B. has been a significant
contributor to the redevelopment of the Village. As a result of that initiative, the A.B.A. honored Union
State Bank its National Community Action Award on November 1, 2000,
in Chicago. The A.B.A. has also recognized Union State Bank for its
support of the Nyack Hospital, Nyack, New York, in the creation of the
state-of-the-art Union State Bank Cancer Care Center.
Additionally, the Good Samaritan Hospital, in Suffern, New York,
opened the new, ultra-modern Union State Bank Birthing Center
because of U.S.B.s lead sponsorship. Personally, Mr. Hales has been a major force in establishing
the Childrens Hospital and Trauma Center, which is presently under
construction. Mr. Hales/Union
State Bank has formally been honored by Sound Shore Hospital in New
Rochelle, New York, Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, New York, Nyack
Hospital in Nyack, New York, Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, the
Leukemia Society of Westchester, dads Against Dangerous Drugs in Rockland
County, the Mental Health Association in Rockland County, the Catholic
