Hon. Vincent DeIorio
Judge
Italian
1997 Recipient

While the common wisdom says that Chivalry is dead, Judge Vincent A. DeIorio proves otherwise. He is not only a man of great gentility, graciousness and generosity-he is also a bona fide Knight. In 1933, Prince Vittorio Emanuele, Duke of Savoy and grandson of the last reigning King of Italy, ordained Judge DeIorio a Cavalliere, or Knight of the Order of Saints Maurizio and Lazzaro, a dynastic order dating from the 10th Century. The honor was bestowed in Divonnes, France in recognition of Judge DeIorio's professional and personal commitment to the welfare of his fellow human beings.

A native of Utica, New York, Judge DeIorio began practicing law in 1955 after earning his degree from the University of Buffalo Law School. After nearly two decades in private practice, he was appointed a Judge of the New York State Court of Claims by Governor Malcolm Wilson to fill an unexpired term and was reappointed by Governor Hugh Carey. Judge DeIorio resigned from the bench in 1978 to reenter private practice in New York City.

Proud of the rich patrimony of Italian and Italian-American culture, Judge DeIorio is an active member of the Columbus Citizens Foundation and the Coalition of Italo-American Associations. He serves as President and member of the Board of Governors of the Forum Club and Executive Vice President and member of the Board of Directors of the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations-two organizations affiliated with the Coalition of Italo-American Associations which, with the Coalition, engage in a variety of charitable endeavors, including the Ellis Island Medal of Honor Annual Awards.

Judge DeIorio is a member and past President of the Columbian Lawyers Association of Westchester County and one of the Founders of the Confederation of Columbian Lawyers Associations embracing the Suffolk, Nassau, Queens, Brooklyn, First Department and Westchester Associations. He is a member of the New York State and American Bar Associations and a former member of the Committee on Character and Fitness of the Fifth Judicial District and of the Council of Judicial Associations of the Judicial Section of the New York State Bar Association. He has served as a member and Chairman of the White Plains Board of Assessment Review.

His dedication to the community has included serving as Vice President of the Central Association for the Blind, a member of the Advisory Board of the Lighthouse, Inc., Hudson Valley Region, a member of the Board of Directors of the Boys Club and Trustee of the YMCA.

Judge DeIorio chaired the statewide Commission on Reapportionment and Redistricting of the Congressional Districts of New York four years ago. Early in his career, he served as Chairman of the Commission to Reorganize Oneida County Government, guiding the County to adopt its charter form of government. Prior to his appointment to the bench, Judge DeIorio served as Counsel to the Utica Municipal Housing Authority and was Chairman of the Neighborhood Services of Utica Community Association.

Judge DeIorio is married to the former Marie Calnero. The DeIorios have three children-Barbara Jean, Karen and Patrick and six grandchildren-Joseph, Gabrielle, Gioia, Russell, Isabella and Elizabeth.
