One of NECO's goals is to increase the number of international student ambassadors each year—both from countries that are under-represented and from additional nations.
Maurice Buckley, NECO President, sponsors two ambassadors from Ireland each year. "The letters I get from these kids after their week in Washington are absolutely inspiring," he said. "I can't think of a more effective means of insuring that our world will be in good hands when the next generation takes over."

Theme subjects of the week were technology, entrepreneurship, and leadership. The participants live together, in a George Washington University dormitory, in an atmosphere of friendship and cooperation. The "ambassadors"—over 400 of them—return home, ready to make a commitment to community service, and to play a leadership role in the future of their neighborhoods and nations. Leading up to the annual HOBY World Leadership Congress, students attend local youth leadership seminars here and abroad. HOBY has programs in Canada, Mexico, Israel, Korea, Taiwan, Bolivia, Argentina, China, and this past year, Iraq. Students from many more countries—including Lebanon, Jordan and the Philippines—attend the international Congress in Washington, D.C. HOBY hopes to add students from additional countries, including Iran, Ghana, Zambia, Latvia and Kenya, in the future.
Since 1958, HOBY has impacted more than 345,000 high school students in the US and abroad.
