Ellis Island International Medal of Honor

The world grows smaller each day. Nations, economies and peoples throughout the world are interdependent; what each does-or does not do-impacts the others.

For three years, NECO has presented an Ellis Island International Medal of Honor to a citizen of another nation who has had a significant effect on the United States and her citizens. Each of our International Medalists employs thousands of U.S. citizens, adding to our economy and the global economy. Each, too, is noted for generosity and philanthropy, and has-both personally and corporately-made an essential contribution to the world at large.

2006 Ellis Island International Medal of Honor:
Martin J. Sullivan

A citizen of Britain, Martin J. Sullivan sits at the helm of a giant American company:
the American International Group, or AIG. He rose through the ranks of AIG through three decades.

AIG, and its President, are known for their philanthropy and support of people and projects across the globe.

2005 Ellis Island International Medal of Honor:
Richard Pratt

Born in Poland, Richard Pratt escaped with his family to Australia on the eve of World War II. He is Chairman of Visy Industries, which employs more than 7,000 people in Australia and the U.S., where it is known as Pratt Industries. The company's New York paper mill is the only mill ever built in New York City, and the largest manufacturing investment of any kind in the City in 50 years.

Visy and Pratt Industries are world leaders in conservation. The New York mill alone, producing 100% recycled paper, saves 4,000 trees per day, and uses 1,000 tons of paper daily that would otherwise have gone to landfill.

Richard Pratt and his family are among Australia's major private philanthropists. In 1998 he was awarded Australia's highest honor: the AC-the Companion of the Order of Australia.

2004 Ellis Island International Medal of Honor:
Sir Michael W.J. Smurfit

Born in Lancashire, England, Sir Michael Smurfit holds dual Irish and British citizenship. He ran Jefferson Smurfit & Sons Ltd. and the Smurfit Group, for almost 50 years. The paper packaging company has factories in the U.S., Latin America, and throughout Europe. The postgraduate business school of University College Dublin-the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business-is named after him. He owns the K Club, site of the 2006 Ryder Cup.

Sir Michael has been honored throughout the world for his abundant philanthropy. In 2005, he was appointed a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE).
